History of Breed

Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as hunting dogs in the United Kingdom, with the term “cocker” deriving from their use to hunt the Eurasian woodcock. When Cocker Spaniels were brought to the United States, they were bred to a different standard, which enabled them to specialize in hunting the American woodcock. This breed has remained a very well-liked and sought-after dog for generations.

Personality and Temperament

This breed is a very loyal and focused breed that enjoys the attention if her family. They have social and curious personalities yet are not known to be overly active or hyper. They do well with other pets in the family when introduced at a young age. With warm demeanors, they are easy to approach and bond with. They also are known to train easily and enjoy learning new tricks.

Appearance and Grooming

Cocker Spaniels are not high maintenance dogs. They are not considered to be heavy shedders and generally do well with a daily brushing of their coat. Bathing this breed every four to five weeks will help keep her coat shiny, healthy and clean. Routine nail clipping should also be incorporated into this breed’s care routine. This will also help this pup feel his and look her best.

Care and Feeding

Cocker Spaniels are semi active dogs and do need ample amounts of energy to feel their best. The correct ratio of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, will keep this breed healthy. Many Cocker Spaniel owners recommend feeding this dog two meals a day, spaced about twelve hours apart. It is also very important to remember to provide your dog with proper dental care. It is suggested that his teeth get cleaned a minimum of three times a week. Failing to keep his teeth clean can contribute to health issues.
